SUPER FUN BUT... ! Wharfedale Super Denton Speaker Review
I make no secret that I am not convinced by the performance of many "retro" looking speakers on the market these days. But designer Peter Comeau is on a bit of a roll. Could his new Wharfedale Super Dentons change my mind?

Hello Tarun, since this is a subjective opinion and with all respect across the pond, whatever you say or claim means absolutely nothing after that point. Here in America, as and audio engineer, tests have conducted objectively; any differences in like cables, all things considered, be it RCA, XLR, balanced or unbalanced power cables and/or speaker wire make NO difference as long as one stays within the constraints of cable length, capacitance, AWG and shielding no matter the cost. For example if you choose to purchase a 6 foot RCA unbalanced cable to connect say a CD deck to an integrated amplifier, a there is absolutely no difference whatsoever in spectrum analysis test results within the audio frequency spectrum all the way up to approx 120 KHz. whether you spend $10 or $2000.

Hello Tarun - another excellent review that I am getting to a little after the fact, but so appreciate your insights. I have been making some recent purchases based heavily on your reviews, and was hoping I might be able to ask for additional insight . . . again, based on your reviews, I am debating between the Atoll in300 and the Sugden A21 to drive some very sensitive/dynamic speakers (currently Klipsch RP8000 Floorstanders, but possibly moving to Zu DW6 in the future - both sensitive and dynamic speakers). From your reviews I am gathering that the Atoll might give more weight and control of the bass, but the Sugden might be more tonally rich. I am listening predominantly to jazz and acoustic and I am currently using the Altair G1.1 that I purchased because of your work, and I truly love it. Thanks so much for any further thoughts and suggestions when making this decision.

recently had this on loan from a hifi shop, it sounded great. I wanted a bit 'more' and ended up buying some old exposure gear, (9 power supply, 4 power amp, and 7 pre amp), but it has left me slightly disappointed. found the older stuff to be lacking in a bit of grittyness, it sounds very smooth. both are with the same speakers and turntable. Feel i might be returning to the 2510! How would you compare the older stuff to the new? thanks

Hi Tarun, I remember the original Dentons and Lintons from my teenage years. Favourites among fellow audiophiles with only the income from working as an apprentice. I guess my speakers qualify as vintage. Lowther Acousta 115s were introduced in 1962 and ran until 1973. (Mine are later ones from 1970-73 so at least 50 years old.) I believe they are Lowther's best selling speaker ever - one "claim to fame" is that Jimi Hendrix owned a pair. After Lowther themselves discontinued this model, they have been in continuous production ever since. Small cabinet-making companies and advanced DIY-ers all over the world have been making them for decades as Lowther sold the plans for this very purpose. Particularly popular in the USA, Japan and Italy. A version of this speaker was re-introduced by Lowther fairly recently. In 1962 they cost £113 and ten shillings. In 2024 they are more like seven grand. Horn cabinets have never been cheap to build. Lowther Acoustas are compact for a horn-loaded speaker but still big by domestic standards. They sound best close to the floor and room corners but that's vintage horns for you. Mine have current production silver-coiled DX3 drivers. I would describe their sound as "unflatteringly transparent". If you want a stethoscope to tell you every mod you make to your system and still sound musical then these are the kiddies. They beam quite noticeably but sitting in the sweet spot they are hard to beat. The closest in sound character to these speakers I have heard are Quad Electrostatics - but the Quads need more power - the Lowthers are a completely practical proposition with my 4 watts of single triode power. 😀

I bought the Lintons with stands and really don't enjoy them. Too big for the bedroom and to small for the living room. Once I had them in the house I could not stand the looks either. They are in the master closet for over a year now. I have no idea how to get rid of them. I bought them because everyone said " Oh my gosh Lintons" I hate them.

Now in the hands of Pro-Ject, the analogue standards should be retained and reviving the shape of earlier DACs would be on improvement on just more boxes. The original A1was somewhat like the NAIM NAIT 2 with few adjustments in those Puritan days and the new A1 is similarly sparse. Given that some recordings actually need 'tone' adjustment because 'engineers' too frequently have off-days, unless one is going to use a mixer in the chain I do not feel enthused. Bad recording seems to worsen by the year in classical music, perhaps because 'engineers' are too brain-rotted by growing up in digital times. Orchestras make many sounds over a vast range and works are performed rather than put together in front of screens by people wearing headphones. Heat still seems to be a problem (many older ones had component failure, often fixed by amateurs) and if the sound is still on the soft/easy side then it has a sound. A good amp at this price and with high pretensions should not have an actual sound but should deliver the source to the speakers. Adjustment upstream of the speakers might be a matter of informed good taste or heresy depending on one's stance.

Based on your reviews, I purchased a complete system from Denafrips. ...but that synergy turned out not to be your piece of cake... synergy is not always sacred. Now it appears that a Hypex Ncore power amplifier provides much more synergy than was suggested. For audiophiles and music lovers who do not have the opportunity to test multiple devices side by side, it remains a gamble, no matter how sincere the review is. Thank you Tarun for highlighting these and a great review. Yes, I like the synergy of my electronics from one brand. Since i became a mid/high end audiophile with my first foray into Linn, i mixed and matched no end, to my cost. I learned about synergy when i bought early Arcam, but didn't settle with the sound, then Linn which i loved for years. After another brands' units were borrowed (upgradeitis) i settled on Cyrus electronics and am satisfied. That is until i heard what a full high end Musical Fidelity system could sound like and THEN a full Luxman ststem, both different, but glorious. BTW knowing that the electronics' synergy is sorted makes looking for speakers sooooo much easier. Thanks again Tarun.

Not a big fan of these heritage designs I'm afraid, but that does not stop me enjoying your coverage. Being just a couple of months away from being 60, these speakers are not so much 'retro' as 'historic' to me, and I remember most of the heritage speakers the first time round :) I also have a lot of time for Wharfdale, having chosen the Elysian 3's as my end game speakers (unless I win the lottery!), and being extremely happy with that choice. As always, I appreciate your clear discussion of where these speakers sit in the audio landscape and I fully expected them to sound a little warm (lush) and slightly less detailed, but I think that's a part of the sonic character that attracts people to them. I'm using a Mcintosh hybrid integrated with a tube pre-amp section and I'm not sure that would be a good match with these characteristics, but I'm not looking at making that match. Nice to hear your experiences as always!

Strange the tweeter has no cavity behind the membrane. I never found a good tweeter which not has a cavity behind the membrane.

Good old stuff probably means it’s got the magic tonality that comes close to an ideal in one’s head to always strive for when buying new stuff It’s not a competition it’s a parallel quest with the old informing the new

Hi, really enjoy your presentation of equipment reviews. I was especially interested in this particular review as I have just acquired a pair of tube monos using the same ECL82 tubes as the Audionote also giving me 8 Watts/channel. As I need to look for a pair of speakers that will work well with the amps I would like to know which of the speakers that you used suited the iZero the best other than the AudioNote speakers. (to be used in a 16' x 10' room)

@@ohyesitsme thx for sharing. In small spaces the Dali Menuet SEs work great 👍

Another great review. I'd love to hear a review from you for the PMC prodigy 1 standmounters.... To compare with this Super Denton in the same price range and also following on from your review of the Prodigy 5 speakers previously.

Thanks for the review. Great explanation of transmission line speakers. Are the prodigy 1 standmounts just as good?

I have a pair of Yamaha NS-30a modded to ns-30 speakers from 1967 that sound fantastic with a SET 2a3 amp. They have a sensitivity of 102db. You don't see that today very often and if you do, it means big money. I bought these from an old fella 7 years ago for a very reasonable 250 Canadian for the pair. They were the but ugly Canadian style with horizontal cabs instead of the more elegant Japanese style cabinets. I rebuilt them to the Japanese spec, changed a few resistors and the 2 caps and they will never be sold as long as I'm alive (I think). Wonderful sounding and very interesting speakers that we will never see again.

I got my JBL 100s for the looks, being voluminous but short and the 12” woofer. I listen to electronica so artist placement is less of a concern to me:)

thank you for the factual and imformative presentation, I'm a big fan of Wharfedale speakers, I'm thinking about upgrading my current Diamond 230 speakers, which are cheap and great, for something maybe a little more expensive and a little better, these Super Denton ones are on my radar, but I'm most interested in the new Wharfedale Aura speakers 4 or 3 . It would be great to hear your assessment of these speakers :). Best regards Suavic
